Harness Training Step 1: Introducing the Harness

The professionals make harness training look quick and easy, but harness training is a slow slow process. This is the story of how I have been training my parrots to accept the harness. I've divided it up into segments to emphasize that training takes time.

The most important step in harness training is to desensitize your parrot to the harness. This means your parrot can not be afraid of the harness and is comfortable around it. Easier said than done obviously.

For my flock, I placed the harness in plain view of their cages every day and near the food bowls on their play stands. They received jackpot rewards initially for being within 2 ft of the harness and eventually rewarded only when they touched it. It took about a month before they were consistently going near the harness without hesitation.
